Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill this week banning the practice known as partial birth abortion.

The legislation was approved last month by the legislature and mirrors a federal ban on the practice that was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2007.

The legislature has tried to pass the bill three times in the last eight years.

Twice, it was vetoed by former Gov. Jennifer Granholm and a third time, it was ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Circuit Court.

The bills would ban the practice of late-term abortions except to protect the life of the mother. Another bill would make performing the procedure a felony carrying a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $50,000 fine.
